Protecting children affected
by extreme rains and flooding
in Cusco, Peru
The Andean region of Cusco was recently affected by torrential rains that resulted in massive flooding and landslides, destroying thousands of homes and livelihoods in an area where poverty and malnutrition were already rampant. ChildHope has partnered with local organisation Amhauta to address this emergency situation by providing daytime shelter and care for children while parents are attempting to rebuild their homes and restore their sources of income.
The project, supported by the LATA Foundation, will last for six months and focus on
providing daily meals, recreation, hygiene education, and medical services to 30 girls
and boys from the affected region.
The project will:
- Establish two centres within the community of Santiago, Cusco where children under 11
years can access a safe and age-appropriate place to spend time - Coordinate directly with women’s organisations and families to operate the centres in
order to effectively address the most severe problems and promote economic initiatives - Provide mothers who work in the centres with a guaranteed weekly income and an
opportunity to learn about issues affecting their children’s development - Reduce the risk of abuse, maltreatment, and danger that occurs when children are left alone
- Decrease incorporation of children into street labour
