In-order to escape an arranged marriage, at just 13 Fana had no choice but to run away from home. Life on her own was hard, but with ChildHope's support Fana now an adult was able to change her life and her 8 year old daughters.
ChildHope's partner CHADET helped Betelhem to enrol at school and worked with Fana to join a Community Self Help and Savings Group. Once a month the women meet with a Business Development Officer who gives training in managing household costs and efficient purchasing of basic items such as oil and coffee beans. The women are encourage to regularly save money, and put this in to a group account, enabling them to qualify for business loans. Through this scheme Fana was able to buy several sheep and start her own business.
Fana's dream of a better education is now achievable for her daughter, who has improved since starting at school. Betelhem is very excited: "I learn a lot through my classes, nowadays if a teacher asks me a question I can answer it, and that makes me very happy. Last year I came 20th out of 55 students. I want to get higher this year, one day maybe I'll be number one".
